Rinn, Stubby, and Tāmarai have just finished talking with Gleason at the Raven Queen’s temple. Before they take Gleason’s advice and go to see Saphy at the Luxon temple, they take a much-needed emotional break for a meal, and to let Stubby change out of her pajamas.
Stubby’s nervousness as they eat eventually causes the other two to ask what’s the matter, at which point she hands over the wooden box she’s had with her since she dressed and came back out to the dining table. She’s made for Rinn a weirdly beautiful gift on which she’s been working for a few days now.
Rinn’s Gloves of Negation:
Inside the box is a cloth wrapped bundle. Inside the bundle is a pair of navy blue gloves of medium weight and length, well suited for Vasselheim’s climate. The exterior of the gloves are simple with only a minor band of embroidery reminiscent of lightning. The palm side of the gloves have rows of subtle copper wire embroidery in the shape of diamonds that extend up the inside of the hands to the pads of the fingers. It also then wraps around the cuffs where there are small blue tourmaline crystals on each wrist. They glow very faintly, not enough to cause undue notice. On either side of the crystal is what looks to be 2 elongated copper “beads” made of rolls of thin copper metal that also are sewn into the same band of copper diamonds.
The gloves can be charged by Rinn’s magic, which at the moment he sometimes can’t control perfectly, so that others won’t be harmed by accident. It gives him a little emotional safety, not having to be scared for others all the time.
Once Rinn heads out on his errands for the day, Tāmarai quickly addresses with Stubby one of her concerns. They discuss, and agree that Flora is probably not going to ever cross their paths again. She’s on her own journey to save her people. Jeremiah is still relatively nearby, in Pyrah, but has committed his life to learning history and ministering to the remnants of the Ravinites who are now living there. They’re unlikely to see him again. The girls conclude that the items they found in the dragons’ lair can be sold, and they need not set aside shares for Flora or Jeremiah.
Tunk and Bob, however, will be back soon enough, if they outlive their mission of investigation of the Godless Lands in the south of Issylra, and so their shares should be preserved.
Then Tāmarai asks Stubby about Rinn, saying that while he’s being paid by the empress to babysit them, after the week is gone he’ll be free of that obligation. Tāmarai likes Rinn, and says so, and would like to keep him close at hand. Therefore, she suggests, they need to split all future findings with him. Make him understand that they are a group together, if he would like to be a group with them. She also explains that when she divides funds, she always gives one full share to the group as a whole, in a special purse within the Bag of Holding.
Eventually they break and go about their own errands; eventually Rinn returns from his and they from theirs. Eventually, bedtime finds them all.
